VY Canis Majoris är sannolikt den största stjärna man har upptäckt. Den är antingen en röd superjätte eller en röd hyperjätte. Volymen är drygt 9 miljarder gånger större än Solen. Stjärnan kan vara så stor som 2,8 miljarder kilometer i diameter. Lägger vi den i vårt solsystem, skulle dess yta ligga strax förbi planeten Jupiter och dess omloppsbana.
Stjärnan ligger 1,5 kiloparsec (ungefär 5 000 ljusår) från jorden.
Ett annat sätt att bilda sig en uppfattning om storleken på stjärnan: om man åker flygplan i 900 km/h, skulle det ta 1 100 år att runda VY Canis Majoris och cirka 8 timmar för ljuset att nå ett varv runt dess ekvator.
Den första kända registreringen VY Canis Majoris (förkortas VY CMA) gjordes av Jérôme Lalande, den 7 mars 1801. I katalogen anges VY CMA som en stjärna i 7:e magnituden. Ytterligare undersökningar av dess magnitud under 1900-talet visade att stjärnan har bleknat sedan 1850.
Sedan 1847 har VY CMA varit känd som en röd stjärna. Under 1900-talet mätte observatörer minst sex diskreta komponenter vid VY CMA, vilket stärkte tanken att den är en multipel stjärna. Dessa diskreta komponenter är idag kända som ljusa områden i stjärnans omgivande nebulosa. Hubbleteleskopet visade 1998 med sin stora upplösning att VY CMA inte är ett dubbelstjärnsystem, den har ingen följeslagande stjärna.
VY CMA har hög luminositet, men är en rätt sval stjärna med sina 3 000 K, jämfört med vår sols 5 778 K.
VY Canis Majoris matar ut enorma mängder gas under sina utbrott.
Det finns två motsatta åsikter om VY CMA:s klassificering. Enligt den ena är stjärnan en mycket stor röd hyperjätte. Enligt den andra (t.ex enligt. Massey, Levesque, och Plez) är stjärnan en normal röd superjätte.
